Our goal is to provide access to technology and skills to young people in southern Mexico, to enable them to launch and sustain careers in their communities. We aim to ease the burden on Mother Earth by reducing landfill waste and repurposing recycled electronics. With the electronic recycle that we refurbish from the U.S. we are able to give access to technology to teachers and students in Chiapas. We work directly with the staff at the schools and students in Chiapas, to teach them computer skills. These skills will empower them to launch careers within their own community as an alternative to fleeing to the US.
Chiapas Education Project is a Nonprofit that refurbishes recycled electronics from the U.S. to provide schools with access to technology in Arriaga Municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas. We have gifted a computer and projector to a Kindergarten and Elementary school in the town of Malpaso, and built a computer lab in the Jr. High in the town of La Azteca. Our organization continues to sponsor their internet services. This keeps electronics out of the landfill, easing the burden on Mother Earth and provides job skills for the students who might otherwise have to leave their country to find work as adults.
Arriaga, Chiapas, is the departure point for the Death Train and a crossroads for most migrants passing through Mexico on their way toward the American Dream. It's also an extremely biodiverse region, containing seven of the nine most representative ecosystems in Mexico - as well as reserves of 13 coveted metals, including titanium, which is used in cell phones and computers and whose extraction results in massive environmental destruction, increased cancers and decreased clean water resources.
Despite this extreme resource wealth, all 99 mining concessions are owned by foreign companies and most young people born in this region don’t have access to technology or education for a career so migrating is mostly the only option.
It's our hope that these new skills will empower these students to start their own online businesses or computer repair/recycling companies that will allow them the option of remaining in their community instead of having to migrate. They will also be able to pass on these skills to their elders, creating an opportunity for intergenerational teaching/learning in a place where many elders are left alone while their youngsters head north to send money home. And by including repair skills, we will also be encouraging students to keep technology out of landfills as well as be able to do more with the little resources they have access to.
We are in need of electronic recycle and monetary donations to ship the electronic devices to Chiapas, Mexico.
