Our first project was a collaboration with educators and students at the Escuela Secundaria Tecnica No. 13 in the town of La Azteca, Arriaga. This Jr. High school has 84 students, ten teachers and used to only have one computer in the whole campus. On October 16th, 2023 we brought 20 computers, to set up a computer lab for teacher and student use. During our 5 week visit to Arriaga, Chiapas our team spent time working with students teaching them basic computer maintenance and repair. These skills and equipment was the beginning of an ongoing relationship, which will allow students to develop their skills and create new career paths. These students can then apply their energy and imagination to creating the Chiapas of the future. We sponsor a teacher to run the computer lab and keep educating the students on technology.
Our first day at the school was 10/16/23. The teachers and students welcomed our team with a delicious meal and traditional dance.
They did this welcoming to thank us for bringing a computer lab to their school as they have been marginalized for years.
We installed surveillance cameras for the school's security.
The classroom in the Jr. High that we were setting up the computer lab in didn’t have much electricity to run all the computers. We sponsored the electricity for the classroom and now is fully equipped.
When we setup the computer lab in October, 2023 at the Jr. High in La Azteca, we ran into the issue of the windows in the classroom being too old to seal and close. This was bringing in a lot of dust as that part of town in Chiapas is very windy. It was affecting the computers to run in a cool temperature environment as the heat would come in and the AC couldn’t keep the room at a cool temperature.
We had the issue of larger critters coming in the classroom such as tarantulas and small lizards through the openings of the windows. A lizard even fried the motherboard of the AC and it was pretty miserable to teach in such a hot environment with all the computers running. We sponsored the repair of the AC for the classroom. The locals raised half the cost of the replacement windows and we sponsored the school with half the cost of the windows to be replaced.
It was our pleasure to provide ice cream for the “Posada” at the Jr. High on 12/14/23. The ice cream was hand made and the vendor showed up with a variety of flavors for the children. The word “Posada” means inn or lodging, and traditionally posadas are a celebration of the Christmas story. Posadas in Mexico feature hot food, drinks, sweets, music, and piñatas.
Some of the students would carry their books in their hands because they didn't have a backpack. We provided backpacks for the students on February 27th, 2024.
